Turquoise is found in only a few places on earth: dry and barren regions where acidic, copper-rich groundwater seeps downward and reacts with minerals that contain phosphorus and aluminum.  The result of this sedimentary process is a porous, semitranslucent to opaque compound of hydrated copper and aluminum phosphate.  Turquoise is found in Africa, Belgium, China, France, Iran, Mexico, the United States, and many other places around the world.

History of Turquoise

Turquoise is a gemstone that formed nearly 30 million years ago when water trickled through a host rock leaving behind deposits of copper, zinc, and aluminum. It gets its color from the metals in the ground where it forms. The gemstone has a rich history throughout millennia and across a variety of cultures. Some highlights of its history include:

  • The rulers of ancient Egypt adorned themselves with turquoise jewelry.
  • Chinese artisans were carving it more than 3,000 years ago.
  • Pre-Columbian Native Americans mined the turquoise stone throughout the present-day southwestern United States.
  • The word “turquoise” comes from the French Pierre torques for “Turkish stone”.
  • Turquoise gemstones were found in jewelry in Egyptian tombs, dating back to 3000 BC.

What is Carnelian?

Carnelian is a brownish-red mineral that is commonly used as a semi-precious gemstone. It is an orange-red variety of chalcedony, a cryptocrystalline quartz mineral. It is a member of the chalcedony family. It is a translucent to opaque variety of quartz that is usually red, orange, brown, pink, and shades of red. The color of carnelian varies ranging from pale orange to an intense almost-black coloration, depending on the mineral composition. Carnelian is frequently used in jewelry and for healing purposes.
